Did you know that year round treatment is important to stop the constant build up of fleas in your pets environment? Flea infestations cause a lot of irritation for your pet, can be a nuisance for you, and can lead to problems that are difficult to treat.

Fleas live in the coat of your pet and result in severe irritation which can lead to constant itchiness, hair loss and even a debilitating skin allergy called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD). Fleas also carry a tapeworm which can infect your pet. While the adult flea is much more visible, there is a hidden army of developing fleas waiting to infest your pet at the first opportunity. A single flea can lay as many as 40 eggs per day, which then fall off your pet on to carpets, wooden floors, bedding, grass or soil. These eggs hatch into a microscopic caterpillar-like creature called a larva. After a week of feeding, the larva spins a cocoon and changes into a pupa. This stage is highly adapted to many different climates. In winter, the pupa can hibernate and survive very low temperatures for at least 4 months.

The cycle of the flea from egg to adult is much shorter in spring due to the rise in temperature. This short cycle in conjunction with the large number of eggs which each female can lay, means an explosive flea problem in the spring/summer period. The flea problems most people see in summer can be prevented by treating their pets as soon as spring begins.

Remember, you must treat all cats and dogs in the household. While cats do not show the signs of flea burdens as much as dogs, they play a very significant role in maintaining household flea populations.

Year round use of a monthly flea preventative is recommended to keep fleas well under control. FRONTLINEå¨ kills adult fleas and stops the flea life cycle completely. Any stray fleas which arrive on the animal from outside your household are also controlled. FRONTLINEå¨ is the most effective, long lasting flea killer for both dogs and cats. When used monthly as FRONTLINEå¨ Plus, or regularly as FRONTLINEå¨ Spray, flea numbers in the environment where the animals live are rapidly reduced to negligible levels. Thus, you and your pets can live safely and comfortably without the heartache of fleas.

FRONTLINEå¨ Plus has been extensively tested and shown to be well-tolerated by dogs and cats even at five times the recommended maximum rate on the label. FRONTLINEå¨ Plus has been used with confidence on millions of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens worldwide.

My pet likes to go swimming. Will FRONTLINEå¨ Plus still be effective?
Many dogs love to go swimming given the opportunity. As FRONTLINEå¨ Plus is stored in the oil and glands of the skin, regular swimming will not reduce the performance of FRONTLINEå¨ Plus against fleas or ticks. So your pet can enjoy the great outdoors just as much as you do.

When should I start treating my pets with FRONTLINE
Immediately; regular treatment with FRONTLINEå¨ Plus (monthly) or FRONTLINEå¨ Spray (2 monthly) is all that is needed for on-going flea control. Begin treatment well before the flea season and continue right through the year to prevent fleas becoming a problem on your pet. Puppies and kittens can be treated from 2 days of age with FRONTLINEå¨ Spray or from 8 weeks of age with FRONTLINEå¨ Plus.

Should I re-apply FRONTLINEå¨ if I see more fleas on my pet soon after application?
No. FRONTLINEå¨ only needs to be applied monthly if using FRONTLINEå¨ Plus, or 2 monthly if FRONTLINEå¨ Spray. If you see fleas or ticks on your treated pet, these have most likely come from your pet's environment and will soon be killed by FRONTLINEå¨.

How long does FRONTLINEå¨ take to work?
FRONTLINEå¨ Spray kills fleas within 24 hours and ticks within 48 hours. FRONTLINEå¨ Plus must first spread in the oils of the skin over the pet's body. This process, called translocation, occurs in about 24 hours, (translocation can be delayed on pets with very dry skin or limited mobility, such as caged animals).

Once fleas and ticks contact FRONTLINEå¨ they are killed within 24 to 48 hours.

In what regions are paralysis ticks found?
Paralysis ticks are found in coastal regions up and down the east coast of Australia. It is always best to consult your veterinarian for local information relating to ticks. Ticks are most prevalent in spring and summer. However, they can also attach onto your dog during autumn and sometimes winter.

Preventing tick paralysis is all about risk management.
åá Avoid known tick areas (bush and scrub) at certain times of the year.
åá Search and remove any ticks found on your pet every day.
åá Use FRONTLINEå¨ Spray (every three weeks at the high dose rate) or FRONTLINEå¨ Plus (every two weeks).
åá Always seek advice from your local vet.

The use of gloves is a sensible practice when applying any insecticide.
